Vonn, 34, has 82 World Cup victories, leaving her five away from breaking the record held by Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden.
âHopefully, I break the record this season and can have fun,â said Vonn, who earned a gold medal in the downhill and a bronze in the super-G at the 2010 Vancouver Games, along with a downhill bronze at the Pyeongchang Olympics last February. âI donât want the record to determine the level of success Iâve had in my career.
âI want to push out of the starting gateâ at Lake Louise, she added, âeven if Iâm not there to win. Lake Louise is just really special to me. Itâs not about the record. Itâs not about, âOh, well, you said you retired.â I really donât care what people think. I really donât. I want to do it for myself.â
Over her career, Vonnâs had a long list of ailments: knee-ligament reconstructions, fractures near her left knee joint, a bruised shin, a broken ankle, a broken arm, a sliced right thumb and countless concussions. She missed the 2014 Sochi Olympics because of an injury to her right knee.
Her latest crash happened at the U.S. ski teamâs speed center in Copper Mountain, Colo. She was cruising down the course when she slid out.
âI donât have a lot of fight left in me,â Vonn said. âIâve had a lot of surgeries. Iâve had a lot of injuries, a lot of setbacks. But Iâm also not a quitter.
âFor me, this last season is just to enjoy it, to have fun. Iâve got a lot of pictures I need to take. Iâm going to be super sentimental. Iâm probably going to cry a lot. But itâs going to be fun.â
